Country House Painting

After James Hart Dyke finished his studies as an architect at the Royal College of Art in 1992 he quickly established himself as a painter of country houses. In 1998 he was one of four living artists to be invited to exhibit at the historical exhibition ‘The Artist and The Country House from the Fifteenth Century to the Present Day’ held at Sotheby’s, London. In a recent article in Country Life, James is described as ‘the man to call’ if commissioning an oil painting of a country house.

Mountain Painting

Between 2000 and 2008 much of James’s work focused on painting Himalayan landscapes. He undertook numerous grueling and dangerous expeditions to remote areas of the mountains. The resulting work formed the basis for several solo exhibitions in central London. In 2005 James discussed his experiences of painting in the Himalayas with Libby Purves on Midweek, BBC Radio Four.

James has also undertaken a solo painting trip across part of the Atlas mountains and often paints in the Alps.

‘Hart Dykes’ ability to capture the essence of the landscape and the fleeting effects of light and colour place him firmly among the best of the British school of ‘plein air’ painters.’
